The following is an excerpt from my largely unwritten novel, to be entitled either “Ocean of Waves” or “The Warrior’s Tear” depending on what I end up writing about. Hope you enjoy!
Maria was visibly shaken after having run into Krobert at Simcon’s get together. No one had expected that Krobert would have shown, least of all as Millie’s guest, leaving Maria to feel that she had been set up by Berto, who she had never really trusted in the first place.
She felt vulnerable and alone, and I was eating a panini.
It was a good panini, crisp outer-workings, good cheese blend, roasted tomatoes. At first I had thought that it was too hot for me to eat, but I later learned (after letting the panini cool) that it was not too hot to eat at all.
It was however, a very warm day.
Maria’s hand was shaking. I noticed.
“How can you eat right now?” Maria asked me.
“I’m hungry,” I said as I chewed my panini.
“How do you sleep at night?”
I finished chewing my bite, then I reached for the napkin in front of me. It felt soft in my hand, but as I rubbed it against my lips I realized it was a very rough napkin.
“How do you sleep at night?” Maria asked again. Her sexy voice was angry.
I looked her in the eye. “Quietly,” I said.
I looked overhead, where a plane was passing by. I thought of all the people in the plane. I though of all the children on board.
Somewhere, in the distance, a check for $7.95 was waiting.
Somewhere, in the distance, a waiter was getting ready.
I looked to Maria. I knew things would never be the same.
Jesus Andrew, you’re gonna make my life as an editor pretttty easy, great grammar!!!!!!!!!!!!!
